David Meddings is the designer for Reelfurniture. With over 25 years experience as a designer and furniture maker David manages to makes innovative furniture for both the home and garden from his chosen material; recycled timber and cable reels. David's work is heavily influence by the construction of industrial cable reels. He masterfully finds practical uses for them to make furniture such as his Reel Chair, Reel Rocker, Small Rocker and many more, which he then finishes with environmentally friendly lacquers for indoor and outdoor use. His attention to detail is truly remarkable; the steel fittings are zinc plated which allows for lasting protection, and the hemp coloured rigging rope is rot proof. It is clear where David gets his passion to make his furniture. He wants us to consider buying recycled wooden furniture so that we reduce deforestation and climate change. He believes that "much has already been said of recycling in the media but it is up to the designers and manufacturers to bring them into the mainstream rather than as 'add on' extras."

Real Furniture manages to make remarkable units whilst drawing the viewer's attention to the importance of forest conservation and effective reclamation of wood which is underpinned through his design. All of Reel Furniture's wooden designs have their own individual character and palpable quality with their grain, knots and patina from a previous life.

When wood rots in landfills or is burnt in incinerators it releases greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change. By finding new uses for wood Real Furniture and their customers both strike a partnership to save the environment. When you buy recycled timber products more trees are left standing, these trees can then absorbs greenhouse gases and also prevents them from going to landfills or incinerators.
